Orkney is a group of 70 islands, the closest being just 6 miles off the Scottish Coast. The Shetlands actually lay a fraction closer to Norway than Britain so have a more Scandinavian feel than Orkney. Both have amazing prehistoric remains witha strong Viking legacy. This circular route means that a wide variety of beautiful Scottish landscapes can be enjoyed both on the way up and on the return journey.

Day 1

We take the early morning sailing from Belfast to Cairnryan driving north along the western edge of Loch Lomond, through Glencoe and Fort William in the shadow of Ben Nevis. The last leg of this introduction to the Highlands follows Loch Ness through the Great Glen, across the city of Inverness where the Caledonian fault reaches the Moray Firth and the North Sea and finally to our hotel in Strathpeffer.
