York & Yorkshire

York & Yorkshire

Yorkshire is England’s largest county and offers a wealth of culture and history; from the ancient Roman city of York to the peaceful and picturesque towns of the Yorkshire Dales.

The city of York is located on the banks of the River Ouse and displays the most complete example of medieval city walls still standing today. The city remains one of the UK’s most popular heritage cities and is renowned for its Roman, Viking and Medieval heritage with lots of attractions for visitors to enjoy. Its historical centrepieces are without doubt Clifford’s Tower and York Minster, the largest Gothic Cathedral in northern Europe.

Our base is the three-star Holiday Inn York sitting on the edge of York next to the racecourse. The hotel has 146 ensuite bedrooms with air-con, tea/coffee

making facilities, direct dial telephone, hairdryer and WiFi.

Day 1

We leave Belfast on the early sailing to Cairnryan. We travel directly to York arriving in late afternoon.

Day 2

As an introduction to York enjoy an informative river cruise along the beautiful River Ouse. See for yourself where Saxons fought Vikings in 1066, where monks entertained their guests and where witches were ducked in the Middle Ages.

The rest of the day will be at leisure for you to explore the city further at your own pace. Highlights include the Castle Museum, York Minster, Yorkshire Museum and Gardens, and the National Railway Museum, the home of the largest collection of steam locomotives in England (including the world famous Mallard).

Day 3

This morning we travel to Pickering to join the North Yorkshire Moors Railway as it steams through Heartbeat Country. We re-join our coach at Goatland and continue on to the unspoilt fishing port of Whitby where in its old town you’ll find a maze of alleyways and narrow streets run down to the busy quayside.
